EMMA AWARDED MORTONS SOLICITORS AWARD FOR FIRST CLASS RESULTS

The University of Sunderland’s Law Department has named Emma Smith as this year’s winner of the Mortons Solicitors Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Law.

Emma, from Ashbrook in Sunderland, has single-mindedly pursued her love of law from childhood. She graduated from the University of Sunderland with a first class Honours Degree in Law on Monday 12 July, and now intends to continue to study the subject at PhD level, ideally at Sunderland.

Mortons has supported the University of Sunderland’s Law Department for many years. Giles McCourt, Business and Employment Associate at Mortons, said:

“Emma's achievement is exceptional. She is a great example to those embarking upon their studies of what can be achieved with commitment and hard work. We are delighted to be able to recognise her effort and ability.”

Emma says that she always aimed for a first class degree, but never thought she would be nominated for an award too.

In fact, she has won two awards during her time at the University of Sunderland. She collected the Paralegal Law Award in her first year for achieving the highest mark in Criminal Law.

Emma said: “I’ve been lucky to have studied in a law school with a genuine open door policy, great lecturers and a good choice of modules. It’s been everything I ever thought it could be and I’ve enjoyed my studies enormously.”

Emma focused on Criminal Evidence Law for her dissertation, a topical and controversial area of the Criminal Justice Act.

Ben Middleton, Law lecturer at the University of Sunderland said: “Emma thoroughly deserves this award and her first class degree. We wish her well in the future.  The University and Mortons have built a strong relationship over the years. Mortons has provided lectures for our students and supported the department for some time. We appreciate the firm’s involvement with our courses.”

Angela Ashcroft, Senior Partner at Mortons agrees. She said:

"We have been proud to support Sunderland Law School over recent years, it is rewarding to see new talent such as Emma emerge from the courses run by the university and we are proud to put our name to this Prize. We wish Emma every success in her future career and feel sure that she will excel in all that she undertakes. Well done Emma."

The Law Department is offering two new modules for students from September 2010. They are Space Law and Coroners’ Law; both will form part of the third year programme of the Undergraduate Degree.

The University of Sunderland’s Law Department was the only one of any UK university to achieve 100% student satisfaction in the Guardian league tables 2011.
